Wow. Just wow.
I am completely surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. Chalk up a win for this book club selection.
I had few expectations, as reading the description of a boy searching for his father and trying to figure out his own life did not have much appeal. But this book is so much more.
I love how the book was plotted by Ms. Dean. We have present chapters, interspersed by background chapters. With the occasional chapter about Dylan's father. This layout really lent itself to the story. I was immediately hooked.
As a character, Dylan has had a difficult life. Not a life I could ever understand. But still, I empathized with him. I read the book hoping for the best for Dylan.
Overall an amazing read!

Take Me There Carolee Dean 9781416989509 Books Reviews

I got this book looking for a new teen romance novel and wound up falling into a book that teaches a lesson. This book incorporates a teen romance, life choices, and suspense of a murder. Incredible read good for Teens and adults alike!
Amazing how the author can have you so enthralled in the character. Even though the character is not publicly seen as a good person, you see the good qualities in the character through the descriptive telling of his inner feelings.
Great book! Read it a time or two before and it is a great topic to write about! Can't wait to havve it for my friends to read.
I had to wait a little bit to write this review because I couldn't stop crying long enough! This book was heart wrenching with a heart breaking ending. For those who have read my other reviews, I am a happy ending person. I guess it would depend on your personal point of view, but I did not find this ending to be happy. I wished the ending could have turned out better for the characters involved, but I guess I understand why it had to be that way considering the point the author was trying to get across. I do think this was a wonderfully written book, and should probably be a required read in high school. The lessons are harsh, but accurate, and though I know this was a work of fiction, it portrayed a tale that is all to realistic of the link between illiteracy and juvenile delinquency. Overall, this is a tale of love, loss, and the road to redemption.
This is a heart wrenching take on a young man trying to make his life better. He seems to get no breaks in life and yet still tries to do the right thing. Although his best friend Wade continually brings him down, Dylan never stops looking out for him. Dylan is also pugnacious and resourceful which makes his journey to find the truth about his father and his past that much more challenging and eventually gratifying. Throughout his struggles the reader is comforted that he has found Jess who he is completed devoted to, as she is to him. This is great novel and although depressing at times paints a picture of hope for the future.
The "teen" label on this is not fair. While it could appeal to teens, and will appeal to teens, I would highly recommend this piece of work to anyone that likes a suspenseful, entertaining, hanging by the threads thriller. It features the story of a couple of different people, intertwined in the lives of their drama, their school, their lives, and at times, you just don't know how much more could happen to one poor innocent person. Until something else happens. And then you get excited, because, unlike many other books that don't have happy parts in it? This does. It goes up and down like a roller coaster, and you don't know what twist or turn you are going to wind up on next.

Very worth reading. Carolee Dean is an exceptional writer that appeals to teens and adults alike. It is one of my favorite books of the year, along with the other of hers I read. Highly recommended.
Take Me There was a story about a 17 year old boy who grew up without a father because his father was states away in prison. Growing up, noone talked to him about his father or why his dad was locked away. He grew up knowing nothing about his family's past. As he travels down the "bad" road, winding up in juvie and struggling to break out of the gang crowd, he makes a last ditch effort to figure out who he is by running to meet his father who is waiting his execution date just two weeks off. Half of the book is about Dylan Jr trying to piece his family's life together to get answers... and then trying to decide what is the "right" thing to do. Because what is the truth and what is right don't always measure up against each other.

Jess is a beautiful rich girl who wants people to like her for who she is, not for how much money her father has in the bank. Dylan Jr and Jess met as young adolescents and as Dylan was in and out of schools because his mother moved him all across the Californian state to outrun her memories, Jess lived a good life in the sense that she was gorgeous, had friends, had money. They meet again as Dylan is a mechanic and her Beemer has is busted. But Jess is smart and can see through the rough exterior to Dylan's heart of gold. He would do anything to feel worthy of Jess's love, but has trouble letting himself feel enough to take her into his heart.

Take Me There is about letting love rule, forgiveness and doing what you believe is right in the face of death- no matter what. It's an easy read, though the topic is heavy. And the ending leaves some unanswered questions.
